COVID-19 and Changes to Global Visas

On June 22, President Trump signed an executive order restricting the issuance of H-1B, H-2B, J, and L nonimmigrant visas through the remainder of 2020. You need to understand these restrictions and their impact on your international recruits, recent hires, and existing employees.

A series of Executive Orders have sought to limit travel and immigration into the United States by citizens of selected, specific countries. Department of Homeland Security regulations exclude would-be immigrants whose financial status suggests future dependence on social services. In 2019, immigration attorneys detected L-1 visa holders were receiving adverse treatment at the Canadian border.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Supreme Court stunned the White House with its mid-June ruling that the DACA program's rescission by executive order was improper and unenforceable.

  • How will the June 22 Executive Order affect employment visas?
  • When are H-1B, H-2B, and L-1 visas appropriately used?
  • What alternatives to H and L visas exist?
  • When should Curricular and Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) be used at the university level?
  • How will the Supreme Court’s new DACA decision affect employers?
  • How does the “New NAFTA” affect the TN visa program?
