Fiscal sponsorship, where an existing nonprofit helps develop a smaller and sometimes early-stage organization without its own tax-exempt designation, can be a tremendous tool for both the sponsoring organization and the project that is being sponsored. But organizations often get into these kinds of arrangements casually or unknowingly -- and without careful planning, they can cause a variety of issues.
Often, fiscal sponsorships’ benefits and pitfalls are discussed in legal terms, but the operational nuances of managing a fiscal sponsor program require specific competencies to ensure the program is benefiting all involved and is not detrimental to the sponsor organization, its staff, board and its tax-exempt status.
