Regardless of whether a nonprofit is in its early startup phase or well into service delivery, at the core of sound financial management is the organization’s budget. Planning what to do with the revenue expected, as well as developing contingency budgets in the event of new funding opportunities or shortfalls, are critical aspects for ensuring that services will be delivered and the mission accomplished. But, understanding the complexities of annual budgets, effectively allocating the resources required to achieve the needed goals, and then effectively communicating these critical interrelated and interconnected aspects to supporters, staff and other stakeholders can be daunting. Board members, leaders and managers must carefully and confidently navigate each step in the budgeting process or risk losing the public’s trust and the organization failing.
Please join Lynn Ivey as she shares practical strategies for constructing nonprofit budgets that will provide a solid foundation for your mission. Understand the steps involved from developing past performance data and forecasts, to establishing budget targets and assumptions. You will find techniques for defining and refining your organization’s budgeting process, and for preparing budgets that will effectively guide and inform your strategic and management decisions. Understand the differences between operational, capital, opportunity and zero-based budgets, and gain insights as to how different sources and types of income can impact your budget and budgeting process.
